Up the Rules: New Documentation Standards for Museums
Heather Dunn, Canadian Heritage Information Network
Standards are the key to making museum collections data accessible, no matter
what technology is used, from card catalogues to collections management
software. This session will present a basic overview of the main types of
museum documentation standards (metadata, vocabulary / classification, content
standards) and why they are important for museums. Panellists will discuss
recent developments within two specific standards: the new version of the
Nomenclature Classification System for man-made objects, and the
recently-published Cataloging Cultural Objects standard.

Session Description
Update:
Shauna Lee Allen will
explore how the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage
Village has been ensuring an awareness
of Alberta’s
rich heritage by taking programming off-site to participate in the
International Children’s Festival; and Anne Bissionette will share her insight
on museum professionals bound for foreign lands by exploring the challenge of
interpreting a culture that is not one’s own.
Addition:
Shauna
Lee Allen has undertaken a new role at the John
Walter Museum
and will also be exploring how the John
Walter Museum
School students take a
trip back in time to the "Real Fort Edmonton" by visiting the
original fort site.
