Join Lougheed House National and Provincial Historic Site, the 2020 recipient of the Robert R. Janes Award for Social Responsibility, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, for "Who Is Telling Our Stories, Who Is Listening? A Journey of Engagement at Lougheed House National and Provincial Historic Site." Community engagement is often presented as a way to build new audiences, expand diversity, and increase collaboration between the museum and its community. Lougheed House National and Provincial Historic Site has successfully developed new projects with a focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA). This workshop will explore Lougheed House’s community engagement framework, Roar and Métis Identity projects, and Lougheed House Re-Imagined initiatives with a particular focus on ‘bringing along’ members of the community with existing relationships with Lougheed House while the organization undergoes transformational change. This workshop will explore how all cultural organizations can consider relationships to understand, empathize with, and reassure visitors that they will continue to be welcome. Featuring presentations from Lougheed House staff, community partners, and Susie Wilkening (author of the American Alliance of Museum’s Audiences and Inclusion primer), this event promises to be full of learning, discussions, and questions. The workshop will provide participants an opportunity to learn about the process, successes, and continued relationships built from Lougheed House’s recent community engagement work. Participants will also have the opportunity to workshop a community engagement concept for their own organization. Please note: Discounted rates are available when registering for both 2021 Social Responsibility Workshops; please email us at registration@museums.ab.ca before you register. For further information on the workshop or the Robert R. Janes Award for Social Responsibility, please contact Ben Fast, Program Lead, at learning@museums.ab.ca. The Robert R. Janes Award for Social Responsibility directly supports museums that are true contributors to the social, cultural, and educational fabric of Alberta. The award recognizes museums that demonstrate leadership in building museums as true community spaces that affect our environmental and social landscapes.
