Museums @ the Mic Podcasts

Podcast

Welcome to Museums @ the Mic, the podcast of the Alberta Museums Association! As a tie-in with the AMA's 50th Anniversary Conference Series, Season 2 of the Museums @ the Mic podcast takes you behind the scenes in our planning; shares sneak peeks from some of our Conference keynote speakers, presenters, and contributors; and showcases examples of the work the AMA, our members, and the museum and heritage sector have been doing over the past 50 years.

Jumping into the March Conference Event

To kick off our 2021 Conference Series, we take a look at our March Conference Event with a peek behind the scenes with members of the Program Committee, clips from a special podcast roundtable discussion, and an interview with Corey Timpson, our March keynote presenter.

Your June Conference Event Extras

Ahead of our June Event, we heard from Nicole Balsdon at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum about their Researchers Revealed exhibit, and talked with former Executive Directors of the AMA about the future of the organization. We also received a special anniversary message, before hearing about how Nancy Nickolson's personal interest in old skills turned into a social media sensation for the Royal Alberta Museum during lockdown. View some of the videos Nancy created for the Royal Alberta Museum's social media platforms: "How to Fold a Fitted Sheet," "How to Sew a Button", and "How to Sew a Mask on an Antique Sewing Machine."

Extended Conversations from Summer 2021

In the first of our bonus episodes from summer 2021, we have two extended conversations exploring the trends and priorities shaping the future of our sector. First, learn about "Cree: The People's Language," a travelling exhibit from the Canadian Language Museum, with founder Dr. Elaine Gold. Next, hear from Rachel Yates, Curator of Pacific Cultures at the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, about Project IKA, a co-collecting project to document the effects of climate change in Tokelau, a series of coral atolls in the South Pacific. Before listening, read the Project IKA background blog, which defines some Maori and Tokelauan terminology as well as co-collecting concepts, and shares images of the atolls.

Your November Conference Event Extras

In this episode, we take a closer look at some of the ways museums and heritage organizations are building community connections. First, we have a conversation with Bob Weaver and Terry McGuire, two retired Parks Canada employees who now travel around Alberta and eastern BC to restore plaques and historic monuments. Second, hear an excerpt from our interview with Jess and Matt Turtle of Museum of Homelessness ahead of their keynote presentation, "Trauma, Healing, and Justice: Museum Essentials for the 21st Century."

That's A Wrap on Conference 2021

In our season finale, we reflect on the conversations we've had putting together our 2021 Conference Series. We revisit some of our earlier discussions, with an extended clip from our special roundtable from earlier this year with the hosts of four museum podcasts, and even more stories from the volunteer crew of Parks Canada employees travelling around Alberta and BC to restore plaques and historic monuments.

Thank you for joining us this season! We hope you've enjoyed the stories we've shared and the look behind the scenes as we've put together our 2021 Conference Series.
