Downtown Stories:
A Digital Approach to Community Engagement

Candace Lundrigan, Cultural Programmer, Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre

About the Session

Conversations around community access are often dominated by talk of bringing visitors into our museums, but how do you bring your museum out into the community? In this session, hear how the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre went beyond their doors and into the community with Downtown Stories, a smartphone tour linking collections content and community memory to their physical location in the city.

Downtown Stories is a smartphone experience and story sharing platform, empowered by Guide by Cell. Launched during the summer of 2021 by the City of Medicine Hat via the Esplanade, it captures the heritage and living memory of 17 locations in downtown Medicine Hat. With a focus on community voice in the creation of this experience, Downtown Stories invites community members to share memories, comments, photos, and participate in polls, surveys, and quizzes. Learn how community voice will also shape the project going forward, with the aims to increase community engagement, amplify the community's cultural assets, increase their accessibility, and contribute to a shared sense of place among residents and visitors, in a sustainable and measurable way.

Questions to Consider

  • With many digital solutions available, how will the digital experience created best serve your community?
  • A major benefit of a digital platform is community engagement. How can we involve the community as a stakeholder, not only during the creation phase, but throughout the life of the digital project, in a sustainable way?
